Lost Frames of Summer 2024
I had a lot going on last year. So much so that I allowed 8 rolls of 35mm film to sit in moving boxes, tucked away in my closet and the drawer of my desk, neglected for months. I’m not sure why these rolls got left behind. I was still developing others from around the same time and working on new projects. Maybe I was just meant to see them now.
In the spring of 2024, I was started going through a breakup and by summer, I was moving out of the city I’d called home for the past 4 years. Where I lived a walk away from my closest friends and my favorite places in town. Despite the challenges of a big transition and a lack of closure, I carried with me a deep sense of hope. I’m sure I’ve fully processed much of last year yet, both the good and bad, but one thing is certain: a Sagittarius sun, Scorpio moon, and Libra rising will always find their way through.
As much as this summer was the best yet, full of memories with incredible people, I also spent a lot of time alone, both in my room and out in nature. My camera, much more than just an accessory, was a part of me through it all.
I didn’t remember much of what I’d shot during those months, but two scenes were often on my mind: mushroom pictures of Necla and the photos of Lo and I in the creek (you’ll see soon). Film photography is such a gift in this way. Unlike digital, even if you process the film just a day after completing the roll, you’re still seeing those moments for the first time long after they were captured. One chance to get it right.
It was emotional to look at these photos and reconnect with the evolving versions of myself and my surroundings that I had already forgotten. Below are a selection of the images I received, a special glimpse into my summer of 2024. I’m grateful for the gift of seeing, observing, and being able to value life in the present. To romanticize even the smallest moments and keep them forever.
All images in this post were taken with Kodak Gold 200 or Fujifilm 400 35mm film.
